University of Sargodha Hosts Walk & Seminar on Drug Awareness and Prevention

The Department of Sociology and Criminology, University of Sargodha organized an awareness walk and a seminar titled “From Awareness to Action: Youth Leading a DrugFree Campus” as part of its ongoing Anti-Drugs Drive.
The event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to encourage students to take active roles in creating a drug free academic environment.
Shahzad Asif Khan Regional Police Officer Sargodha served as chief guest while distinguished guest speakers included Lt. Col. Kashif Bashir, Director of the Counter Narcotics Force; Abdul Manan Choudhry, President of the People’s Social Welfare Society; and Dr. Jawad Muhammad Shujaat, CEO Azm Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre.
Addressing the seminar, Shahzad Asif Khan highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures against drug abuse. He stated that curbing narcotics requires awareness, vigilance, and collective responsibility, urging the youth to become ambassadors of a drug-free society.
Lt. Col. Kashif Bashir discussed the major factors contributing to the drug situation in Pakistan, including unemployment, lack of awareness, and the easy availability of narcotics. He also shed light on the harmful effects of drugs on the human body and emphasized the importance of public education to combat this menace.
Dr. Jawad Muhammad Shujaat underlined the importance of early intervention, remarking that addiction should be treated as a health issue rather than a moral failing. He stressed that timely counseling and rehabilitation can help individuals reclaim healthy and productive lives.
Abdul Manan Chaudhry emphasized that educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, and civil society must work hand in hand to promote awareness, provide rehabilitation support, and strengthen community resilience against drugs.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Shahzad Khawar Mushtaq, Chairman Department of Sociology & Criminology, emphasized the importance of youth-led initiatives in tackling substance abuse, stating that fight against drugs begins with awareness and leadership. He urged that students must not only stay away from narcotics but also inspire others to choose a healthy, purposeful life.
In addition, students presented a stage play titled “One Mistake, A Lesson for Life” depicting the tragic journey of a student falling into drug addiction and its devastating consequences.
A poster competition on the theme of drug awareness was also organized, showcasing students’ creativity. Participants with outstanding performances received shields, while all contributors were awarded participation certificates in recognition of their efforts to promote the message of a drug-free society.
Later, an Awareness Walk was conducted, with students, faculty members, and guests carrying banners and placards promoting the message of a drug free campus and society.
