Overview

Established in 2006, the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Sargodha is committed to quality education, research, and practical training in Geology, Geography, and Environmental Sciences. Located in Jinnah Block, the department provides an academic environment that promotes scientific understanding of the Earth, its natural resources, physical processes, and environmental challenges. The department aims to develop skilled, knowledgeable, and responsible graduates through quality teaching, research, and field-based learning. Its mission is to strengthen scientific inquiry, promote interdisciplinary research, and prepare students to contribute to sustainable development and the responsible management of natural resources. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD programs in Geology; BS Geography, including fifth-semester intake; MPhil Geography; BS Environmental Sciences, and BS in Remote Sensing & GIS. Its academic programs combine theoretical knowledge with practical training through fieldwork, laboratory activities, research projects, and the application of modern scientific technologies. Teaching and research cover a broad range of areas, including mineralogy, petrology, geophysics, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geomorphology, GIS and Remote Sensing, environmental assessment, and natural resource management. Students are always encouraged to participate in field investigations, research activities, seminars, and presentations to develop their analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. The department seeks to address important challenges related to groundwater resources, mineral exploration, geological hazards, environmental pollution, climate change, and sustainable land and resource management. Its graduates can pursue careers in government and private sector organizations, geological and environmental consultancy, GIS and Remote Sensing, natural resource management, education, and research, as well as continue their studies at advanced levels. The department remains committed to strengthening academic programs, promoting innovative research, enhancing practical training, and developing collaborations with academic institutions, research organizations, and relevant industries. Through these efforts, it aims to prepare graduates who can contribute meaningfully to scientific advancement and societal development.
